My child is older than 12 weeks. Can I still participate?

No, your child must be less than 12 weeks old for you to participate in this research.

I am currently pregnant or my child was just born. Can I participate?

Yes, please contact us and we will get you enrolled. Your participation in the surveys and observations will begin when your baby is around 2 months old.

What happens if I no longer live with my child?

We understand that life happens. Simply let us know and we will direct you from there.

Does my spouse/partner and/or my child have to participate?

Only the mother and baby participate in the study. As the mother, you will complete a variety of surveys. Your baby will participate with you in 2 remote feeding observations.

Do I only have to complete one survey?

No, there are multiple parts to this study. You will complete a monthly online survey. We will also email you with instructions on how and when to install a study app on your phone, which will measure your phone and app use across the entire study. There will be a period each month when you will complete 5 very brief surveys per day for 5 days. There is also a remote infant feeding observation (via secure video conference, e.g., Zoom) that happens when your baby is about 2 months old and about 5 months old.

How do I access my surveys? Where is the survey link?

We will email your monthly survey links to the email address you provided to us. We will send your brief daily/EMA surveys to your phone via text messages.

What is my ID number? And why do I have one?

When you enrolled in our study, we assigned you an ID number. This ID number was sent to you in an email. If you can’t find it, email us at [email protected]. We have you use an ID number so that your survey responses and other data are not connected to your name or other personal information. In other words, your ID number keeps your information confidential and safe.

How do I access and complete my daily/EMA surveys?

When it is time for you to begin your 5 days of surveys each month, you will receive text messages with links to those surveys. You will then tap on this link and complete the survey. This will occur 5 times per day for 5 days, but don’t worry as the surveys are very short.

Can I save my survey and come back to it later?

Your progress on your monthly survey is saved. To return to the survey, simply click the survey link again in the email from us. However, the daily/EMA surveys (that occur 5 times a day for 5 days) must each be completed in one sitting, so please plan accordingly. These surveys only take 2 to 3 minutes each though, so they are designed to be easy to complete.

Does the phone app track my device location or contacts?

No, the app does not track or record your location or contacts.

What are you measuring on my phone with the study app?

The phone study app does not track any information about the private content of your phone use. In other words, while it notes when certain apps are running – such as Internet browser, Facebook, Instagram, etc. – it cannot and does not track any contacts made through those apps, what is posted on social media, the content of emails or texts, phone numbers dialed or messages/calls received, etc. Your personal information is safe and is not collected by the app.

Will I be reminded to complete my surveys?

We will send text message and/or email reminders to you. During the monthly surveys, reminders would likely be about every 1 to 2 days or so. During the daily brief surveys, you will likely receive a reminder about 30 minutes to 1 hour after receiving your survey link, as those surveys need to be completed quickly. I am not receiving the reminder messages. What should I do?

If you are not receiving text message or email reminder messages from us, please check your spam/junk folder in your email inbox. The messages may be there, and you can mark these as safe messages. You can also add our email address [email protected] to your contact list. If you cannot find the messages, please contact us via email or at 260-266-7739.

How will I know when I’m supposed to stop filling out the daily brief surveys?

You will receive an email or message once your 5 days of surveys are complete each month letting you know that your 5-day period has ended for that month. Remember that the study goes on for 4 months though, so you will have more surveys to do each month.

How and when do I receive my compensation (gift card)?

You will be compensated via an Amazon gift card code for each wave (e.g., month) of the study that you complete. It will be emailed to you within 3 weeks of you completing each wave of the study.

I no longer want to be in this study. How do I stop participation?

Thank you for your time! To stop participating, simply contact the research team to let us know that you would like to stop participating in the study. We will then advise you on next steps and will remove you from our active participants as soon as possible and you will no longer receive messages from the research team for this study. If you have given us prior permission to contact you about future studies, you may receive messages about future studies. If you would like to be removed from the future studies list, please let us know.

Is there any way this study could be bad for me?

It is not anticipated that participation in this study will have any bad outcomes for you or create anything, if at all, beyond minor emotional discomfort. If you are experiencing distress related to any of the topics being studied, we wish to remind you that your reactions to questions are not being directly monitored and that there will be no assistance provided by the study in response to your answers on any questions.
