The holiday season can be challenging for those who’ve undergone bariatric surgery. Holiday gatherings typically include family, friends and an array of food likely to sabotage or hinder the hard work and progress of someone’s weight loss journey. However, with a little planning, preparation and mindfulness your holidays are sure to be filled with enjoyment. Here are several helpful tips to keep you on track as you celebrate this year.

Enjoy the company you keep

Focus your attention on the time spent with friends and family and playing holiday games instead of decadent treats and sweets. Surround yourself with a strong support system this holiday season.

Replete not ravenous

Never arrive at a party hungry. Stick to your regular eating schedule and don't skip a meal to overindulge later.

Think before you drink

Be cautious of your alcohol consumption. Alcoholic beverages are typically high in "empty calories" without much nutritional value. Also, alcohol may affect you differently after bariatric surgery, feeling the effects of sooner and with less effort.

Contribute

It’s always a great idea to bring a dish. Having a dish you know you can enjoy can lessen fears and anxiety when heading out to a holiday gathering.

Watch portion sizes

Eating off an appetizer plate can help you stick to small portions. Also, locating yourself away from the buffet table will help you avoid mindless nibbling as you converse with friends and family.

Finally, remember to enjoy the holidays and celebrate the spirit of the season. Don't let the hustle and bustle get in the way of your success.
