Brian LaMar, MD, Parkview Weight Management, offers suggestions for how to stay on track outside of the weekday routine.

When we look at our diets and lifestyle changes, one of the main concerns is how those practices carry over into the weekends. Our food choices, schedules and activities are different. We have more choices. So, it’s easy to lose sight of our goals and routine and make selections that don’t align with those priorities from Friday night on.

How to stay on track

Some ways to maintain your healthier lifestyle on the weekends is to:

Plan ahead. Make sure you stay accountable. If you know where you’re going, look at the menu ahead of time, make a selection and log/track the calories.

Pregame. If you’re going out and socializing with friends and family at a bar where you’ll be having food and drinks, eat something healthy before you go. This can reduce the amount you consume once you leave home.

Reframe. Rethink weekend activities. Rather than meeting at bars and restaurants, can you go for a hike or try a new activity with your friends and family? By choosing more active get-togethers, you’re helping yourself, as well as those you love.
