Everyone has a specific foot type. Some have a high arch, while others have a medium or no arch to the foot. When there is no arch, that means the midfoot collapses, causing the entire bottom of the foot to touch the ground. This can be present at birth or develop over time. Some can suffer from pain and others could have no pain at all. This is often an inherited trait from the parents but can also be acquired.
Support for flat feet
The best way to care for your feet is by wearing the correct shoe for your foot type. Choose shoes with arch support, a firm midsole and cushioning.
Sometimes orthotics are needed for addition support. There is a vast range of over-the-counter orthotics, but stick to a stiff insole that doesn’t bend or fold. If it does bend, it should only bend where your toes fold naturally.
Foot exercises can help strengthen and stretch the lower extremity but will not change the deformity. Maintaining a healthy weight will also help prevent excess stress to the feet.
Final thoughts
Flat feet don't always cause problems. It's when the foot is not accommodated or supported enough that issues arise. While supportive shoes aren’t always the most stylish, it’s important to prioritize comfort over fashion.
If you begin to experience persistent pain, seek advice from a podiatrist.
