Adult Mental Health Services

Parkview Behavioral Health Institute provides the highest quality of mental and emotional healthcare. Our providers and mental health experts provide supportive care that is tailored to each adult and their mental health needs.

Recognizing the warning signs of mental health crises and knowing when to seek help is important to our patient’s healthcare. Here is what to look for:

  • Difficulty managing daily activities
  • Significant changes in eating and sleep patterns
  • Noticeable personality changes/extreme mood swings
  • Deteriorating relationships
  • Depressionanxiety and panic disorders
  • Suicidal/homicidal thoughts

Parkview Behavioral Health’s inpatient treatment program is the next step if your loved one:

  • Displays these warning signs
  • Poses a threat to your safety
  • Poses a threat to his or her own safety
  • Has not responded to outpatient treatment
  • Has not responded to medication

Adult inpatient services

Parkview Behavioral Health’s inpatient treatment programs offer support to those whose mental health requires short-term intervention in a supportive environment. We consistently provide excellent care – which is reflected by our consistently high customer-satisfaction scores.

Our highly skilled, multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers, nurses and mental health technicians creates a personalized treatment plan for each patient to encourage healing and recovery. Treatment plans may incorporate a variety of mental health tools, including family therapy, group interaction, therapeutic recreation, medication and other approaches. These tools, along with additional outpatient therapy and resources, help pave the road to healing and recovery when patients complete the treatment program.

What is the process when an adult is admitted to the inpatient unit?

Upon arrival to the unit, patients are greeted by the registered nurse (RN) who explains what to expect during the admission process. The patient is then asked to give the staff any personal belongings for inventory and safe storage. The patient is taken to an assessment room where a skin and safety check are conducted and documented. The RN and the patient will then meet in a consult room to complete the admission documentation, discuss treatment goals and answer questions the patient may have.

What assessments are performed once a patient is admitted?

Adult patients are seen every day by a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Nursing assessments occur once every eight hours where nurses address emotional, physical and psychosocial well-being while monitoring for any potential medication side effects. In addition to Register Nurses, Mental Health Technicians, Patient Care Technicians and Behavioral Health Specialists are on the units monitoring patients at all times documenting their activities and behaviors every 15 minutes. Based on the patient’s condition, assessments may occur more frequently.

What is continuity of care?

For both youth and adults, patients stay on the inpatient unit for three to seven days where they are stabilized with medication and offered numerous group therapy sessions throughout the day. Upon discharge, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled within seven days with a psychiatric outpatient provider who will take over the patient’s care in an outpatient setting. Any new medications ordered during the inpatient stay will be prescribed to the patient’s pharmacy of choice, or they can utilize our “Meds to Beds” program where a small supply of the new medications are given directly at discharge.

Are work notes provided if admitted?

Adults may request a note for work purposes upon discharge.

Are visitors allowed?

Adult and youth services do not permit any visitors under the age of 18 while inpatient. To protect the privacy of our patients, each visitor must have a patient code to see or talk with the patients. Without a patient code, no visitors or phone calls will be sent to the units.

Are electronics allowed on the unit?

No cell phones or electronic devices are allowed on the inpatient unit. They are inventoried, stored and returned upon discharge.

Will my family be informed about my care while I am inpatient?

Adult patients will identify if they want anyone in their treatment plan. Without the patient consenting to have someone involved, information cannot be shared.

What should I bring with me for my inpatient stay?

You can bring a couple of changes of clothes and footwear that do not require laces. Toiletries are provided on the unit.
