Youth Mental Health Services

If your child or adolescent is acting out or behaving in an unusual manner, it can be difficult for you, as a parent/guardian, to determine whether the behavior is “just a phase” or an indication of a more serious situation. That’s where Parkview Behavioral Health Institute’s Child and Adolescent Youth Services can help.

Individualized care

Our skilled mental health teams work directly with you and your child to develop an individualized care plan that encourages healing and recovery. Through the Child and Adolescent Youth Services program, your child can:

  • Receive one-on-one support and education
  • Become more aware of, and learn to appropriately express, their emotions and needs
  • Build self-esteem and interpersonal skills
  • Learn problem-solving skills
  • Participate in art and recreational therapy, exercise and other movement activities

We also offer family therapy and parent education sessions, as family members most often facilitate positive change in children and adolescents. Parents and other caregivers are encouraged to be active participants in their child’s personalized care plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the process when a youth is admitted to the inpatient unit?

When a youth patient arrives on the inpatient unit, they will be taken to a room with their parent(s) and one of the unit’s registered nurses (RN). The nurse will explain what the patient can expect throughout the length of their stay and answer any questions. The nurse will then speak with the patient alone, for their privacy, and ask details of their admission, what their home life is like, how they learn best and what they would like to accomplish while they are on the inpatient unit.

What assessments are performed once a patient is admitted?

Youth patients are seen every day, either by a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner (NP). They are also formally assessed by an RN once every eight hours to check their emotional well-being and monitor any medication side effects of the patient. Registered Nurses, Behavior Health Specialists and Mental Health Technicians are also on the unit with patients at all times checking in and having one-on-one conversations with them.

What is continuity of care?

For both youth and adults, patients stay on the inpatient unit for three to seven days where they are stabilized with medication and offered numerous group therapy sessions throughout the day. Upon discharge, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled within seven days with a psychiatric outpatient provider who will take over the patient’s care in an outpatient setting. Any new medications ordered during the inpatient stay will be prescribed to the patient’s pharmacy of choice, or they can utilize our “Meds to Beds” program where a small supply of the new medications are given directly at discharge.

Are school notes provided if admitted?

Youth services will provide a school note upon discharge for any missed days while on inpatient.

Are visitors allowed?

Adult and Youth services do not permit any visitors under the age of 18 while inpatient.  Youth patients may only talk with immediate family members and no significant others are permitted

To protect the privacy of our patients, each visitor must have a patient code to see or talk with the patients. Without a patient code, no visitors or phone calls will be sent to the units.

Are electronics allowed on the unit?

No cell phones or electronic devices are allowed on the inpatient unit. They are inventoried, stored and returned upon discharge.

Will my family be informed about my care while I am inpatient?

Yes. On the youth unit, the physicians will call the patient’s family to discuss the treatment plan after their initial assessment and the nurses will call about new medications being started. We also provide time for the parents to be involved in a treatment planning session with the provider, nursing staff and therapists via telephone. Any other updates can be given if the family calls the unit and asks the nursing staff for an update. The family will be required to give a “patient code,” which will be given to them at admission.

What should I bring with me for my inpatient stay?

You can bring a couple of changes of clothes and footwear that do not require laces. Toiletries are provided on the unit.
