One of the specialty services we offer at Parkview Sports Medicine is body composition analysis using the DEXA Body Composition Scan. As the region’s only registered sports dietitians, we offer DEXA scans as a way to consult with athletes looking to improve their performance and improve their body composition.
A DEXA scan is a tool to help you understand your body’s individual strengths and weaknesses with respect to training or exercise, diet and overall health. It’s a quick, non-invasive way to accurately and reliably measure total body fat and total muscle mass.
This 10-minute test provides a comprehensive breakdown of bone, fat tissue and lean muscle mass with detailed information about the distribution throughout the body. You’ll also see your resting metabolic rate. Compared with generic and potentially misleading BMI calculations, a DEXA scan is far more accurate and detailed.
Once the test is complete, results are immediate. A Parkview Sports Medicine sports dietitian will meet with you for approximately ten minutes to review your results and answer questions. Additional consultation is available, and subsequent scans in three to six months are recommended.
Assessing body composition can be valuable to individuals managing many conditions, including those where body fat or distribution of body fat is a risk factor. Some of these conditions include:
- Clinical obesity
- Eating disorders
- History of injury
- Diabetes
Having lean mass is important for athletes and non-athletes alike, and small changes in body composition can benefit nearly anyone. A DEXA body composition analysis provides valuable information to help you improve your overall health.
The DEXA body composition analysis is located within Parkview Ortho Express, inside the SportONE/Parkview Fieldhouse, entrance 2.
