Expecting moms and gestational diabetes
Gestational diabetes occurs when pregnancy hormones cause the body to become resistant to insulin. This resistance can increase throughout the pregnancy. Routine testing for gestational diabetes occurs between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy.
Insulin resistance increases across pregnancy, potentially requiring frequent adjustment of medication and close monitoring. For most women, this condition will resolve after delivery of the placenta. For women with gestational diabetes, it is important to be tested for continued insulin resistance at the postpartum visit with your physician. For women who developed gestational diabetes during pregnancy, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet is important as they are at a higher lifetime risk for development for Type 2 diabetes.
The Parkview Diabetes Services team offers education specifically for women with diabetes who become pregnant or are planning to become pregnant. This team also supports women who are diagnosed with diabetes during their pregnancy.
