Why diversity matters

Community

This post was written by Diana Jackson-Davis Ph.D., Director of Diversity and Inclusion.

Parkview’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion strives to transform and cultivate the community into a place where all individuals will thrive, grow and recognize their value in an ever-changing cultural landscape. Northeast Indiana has become a global hub for the international community and I am excited about this change.

I moved to Indiana at a time when the immigrant population was virtually invisible. In the years since, I have watched the emergence of new immigrants from all walks of the world, and it has changed our state and our community. Northeast Indiana is now the home to more than 102 spoken languages.

Why diversity matters to us

At Parkview Health, we have started to make positive changes to impact the patients and people we serve. We are taking extra measures to cultivate a culture of inclusion that is built on compassion, respect, collaboration, competence and care for all of our community members.

This is embedded in our strong belief that we have respect for all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, language, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities/disabilities, socio-economic status, educational backgrounds or region of geographic origins.

Why diversity matters in the workplace

Fostering a diverse workplace has to be part of any organization’s practice. We know that with a diverse workforce, we are best equipped to recognize and address gaps in care and services and effectively plan to improve the health for all people. We are supporting our future and the future of potential employees by hosting, entertaining and engaging in partnership with local and national colleges, universities and organizations who are supportive of diverse and minority representation in all areas of the workplace.

Workplace diversity is a business imperative and a must. The cultivation of difference propels organizations and businesses to high levels of success, which is illuminated by shared stories of excellence and best outcomes for all. In order to build a successful community and improve conditions for all people, we have to understand and appreciate each other’s contributions and provide opportunities for everyone.

If we can establish relationships with people who come from different places, we in turn can build strong alliances and connections based on mutual understanding and respect. Parkview Health is committed to diversity and inclusion and values a system based on this philosophy.
