Adults with speech and language disorders often face challenges with language comprehension and expressing their thoughts and ideas. We work with many individuals who have communication difficulties that present in various combinations – from trouble understanding to difficulty thinking of the words they want to use to knowing what they want to say but being unable to form the words. Speech and language disorders are fairly common in adults, so it’s really important to promote successful communication with them so their loved ones are better able to understand and are understood.

Their loved ones can rest assured that some simple tools can make communication more effective and help them feel better supported.

Communicating to your loved one

While it might seem obvious, The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association reminds people to capture the individual’s attention before proceeding with an exchange. Then, be sure to speak slowly and simply in short sentences while also not “speaking down” to them.

Instructions should be broken down into manageable steps, with repetition offered as needed. Maintain a conversational tone at a comfortable volume. Use clear and respectful language and avoid patronizing tones to help foster a conducive environment for communication. Visual aids – such as pictures, gestures and facial expressions – can be helpful as well.

Your loved one communicating to you

When it comes to understanding your loved one, honesty about comprehension difficulties is key. Embrace imperfection and be patient as they work out how to share their thoughts.

Minimize distractions to help aid in their concentration and pay attention to non-verbal cues so you can pick up on supplementary information. Repeating back what you believe to have heard can ensure clarity as well.

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association website offers a wealth of information and tips for better communicating with adults who have speech and language disorders. To learn more about Parkview’s speech therapy program, visit our website.
