Keep your heart healthy with a HeartSmart CT scan

Last Modified: February 24, 2025

Heart Health

February is Heart Month—a smart time to learn about heart health and ways to keep your heart strong. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, but the good news is that many cardiac problems can be prevented with early check-ups and healthy choices.

One simple way to check your heart health is with a HeartSmart CT Scan. This quick and painless test looks for plaque (a hard substance) in your heart’s arteries. The test gives you a calcium score, which helps doctors see if you are at risk for heart disease. If your score is high, your doctor can help you make a plan to keep your heart safe.

Who can get a HeartSmart CT scan?

You may qualify for this heart test if you:

  • Are a man between 40-75 years old or a woman between 45-75 years old

  • Have never been diagnosed with heart disease

  • Have not had a calcium score before, or your last score was zero at least five years ago

  • Are not having chest pain or trouble breathing (if you are, call 911!)
