March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics which centers around the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is, “Eat Right, Bite by Bite.” To celebrate, we’ve created a series of videos in which we highlight the small goals and changes that can be made while still having a profound effect on your overall health. Join Kendall Ray, RD, Parkview Health, as he kicks off the first of the series by sharing some helpful tips and tricks for a healthy start to your day.
Improve breakfast by trying these suggestions:
- Proper portions. Cereal bowls are typically more than one serving, which often leads to eating more than is needed. An easy way to remedy this is by using a coffee mug instead. They tend to be more of a standard size which can help with portion control.
- Fruitful favorites. To bring a little color and sweetness into your morning routine, you could also try adding chopped apples, bananas, berries or any fruit of your choosing.
- Veg out! Incorporating vegetables into your breakfast doesn’t have to be hard. Try adding chopped bell peppers, onions, mushrooms or tomatoes to your eggs. You could even have a whole-grain bagel and top it with hummus, sliced cucumbers or tomatoes.
- Sidestep the syrup. For another quick breakfast idea, try a whole-grain waffle with peanut butter and sliced strawberries instead of syrup.
- Pump up the protein. Give your cereal or oatmeal a boost by adding a little protein. Some quick protein ideas for your cereal or oatmeal could include incorporating a quarter cup of mixed nuts or 2 tablespoons of nut butter.
