Measuring cups and food scales can help you determine what a portion should look like. When you don’t have access to these tools, your hand can be just as effective.
Here are some tips to help you measure portion sizes using your hand:
One fingertip = 1 teaspoon of butter, mayonnaise or oil
One thumb tip = 1 Tablespoon of salad dressing or peanut butter
One palm = 3 ounces of meat, fish or poultry
One fist = 1 cup of vegetables or fruit
One handful = 1 ounce of nuts
