Family Medicine, People of Parkview

Anyone who has worked, visited or been treated in a healthcare setting knows that it takes a lot of people to make these facilities run smoothly. From the well-kept grounds and buildings to the compassionate voice on the other end of the line when you call, there are more than16,000 individuals serving communities through their positions at Parkview.

Each role has a hand in keeping the wheels turning and providing exceptional service. Some of these positions are obvious – the nurses, techs and physicians. While others share their talents behind the scenes, like our schedulers, billing and marketing teams. It takes everyone. It is each of the 16,000 men and women collectively who make Parkview a place of hope and healing.

Meet Andrew

Changing careers can be a challenging yet rewarding journey and often leads individuals to discover new passions and talents. Andrew Schalk's aptitude for guiding others made for a seamless transition from classroom teacher to Epic care analyst. "I'm an educator by trade. I taught kindergarten and second grade for a number of years in Michigan. While there, I also coached high school baseball," he said.

Andrew explained that he learned of an educator role at Parkview to train co-workers on MyChart®, a healthcare software powered by Epic, through a fellow baseball coach. He joined Parkview in 2012 and has remained in Epic roles since. MyChart®, Epic's patient-facing portal, is an electronic medical record and healthcare resource for patients and providers. With Parkview MyChart®, patients can securely manage their healthcare, communicate with their doctor's office, access care and more via the web or mobile app.

Although Epic provides healthcare software worldwide, the digital health team at Parkview comprises local community members who are deeply invested in the well-being of their neighbors. Andrew's contributions often focus on improving the MyChart patient experience. His activities range from aiding with portal navigation to collaborating with teammates to develop solutions that enhance patient care and access. "We're always looking for ways to improve communication with our patients. I wish everyone knew how easy it was to take control of your health all in one app," he said.

Andrew expressed that he finds great fulfillment in supporting his fellow team members and Parkview patients. "Being able to help our patients find the information they need, sometimes critically, is a rewarding aspect of our job," he said.
