Parkview Health becomes first healthcare system in Indiana to achieve StormReady® Community status

Fort Wayne, IND. – Jan. 6, 2025 – Parkview Health is proud to announce its designation as the first healthcare system in Indiana to achieve StormReady Community status, as recognized by the National Weather Service (NWS).

The StormReady program, a nationwide preparedness initiative, acknowledges communities, organizations, and businesses for their advanced planning, education, and awareness strategies to better prepare for severe weather events. By achieving this status, Parkview demonstrates its dedication to minimizing the potential loss of life and property in the face of natural disasters.

“This recognition is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our co-workers who work to ensure our communities have access to care in all situations,” said Michael Eckroth, corporate director, Emergency Management and Business Continuity, Parkview Health. “The most important element of the StormReady Community status is Parkview’s preparedness to provide continuing medical services and care to patients in the event of a disaster. During a heightened time of need, our doors must remain open.”

To attain StormReady Community status, Parkview met rigorous criteria, including:

  • Establishing a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center.
  • Developing a comprehensive severe weather plan.
  • Conducting regular weather safety training and exercises.
  • Installing multiple ways to receive and disseminate severe weather warnings.

“Parkview's commitment to safety goes beyond everyday care—it extends to ensuring we’re ready to respond in extraordinary circumstances,” said Dr. Thomas Gutwein, Emergency Department Medical Director, Parkview Health. “Earning the StormReady designation highlights our teams' readiness and resilience to maintain emergency medical services and protect the well-being of those we serve, no matter the conditions.”

The designation is valid for four years with a reapplication process required in 2028 to maintain the status. To learn more about the StormReady program, visit www.weather.gov/stormready.
