COVID-19 Health System and Community Support

About

The HSIR team has provided weekly updates with community data visualizations and modeling outputs to Parkview leaders and executives (see also COVID-19 Surge Modeling). The updates have also been shared with our state and regional public health officials, as well as community, industry, and government entities including the Indiana Pandemic Information Collaborative, the Fort Wayne Medical Society, the Fort Wayne Mayor’s Office, and the Allen County Department of Health Board. Additionally, the team continues to support leadership through data analysis, research design, and grant preparation related to COVID-19.

Vaccination simulation tool

As COVID-19 vaccines became available in December 2020, we deployed an application able to simulate vaccination clinics to assist with the planning and daily operations of Parkview’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic. As part of a broader effort involving many departments such as Innovation, Process Improvement, and Nursing Informatics, the application was developed internally by the HSIR team and used to deploy many clinics at Parkview Health and in northeastern Indiana communities, like at rescue missions. Key features of the application include:

  • The simulation of one day of interactions between patients and staff, including screening, patient registration, and vaccination,
  • Multiple user-configurable settings ranging from staffing to task times,
  • All-day and minute-by-minute visualizations of staff utilization, average wait times, and patient lines to identify potential bottlenecks.

The simulation application has been made publicly available alongside a COVID vaccine clinic team handout to help other organizations deploy successful vaccination clinics.

Community surveys

HSIR has worked collaboratively with our community leaders to develop and deploy surveys, and swiftly analyze responses. The insights derived from these surveys are then used by community organizations and local government officials to make data-driven decisions about resource allocation and policy related to COVID-19.
