Our stroke team is standing ready
The Parkview Stanley Wissman Stroke Center provides top-quality stroke care and rehabilitation at Parkview Regional Medical Center and Parkview Hospital Randallia, both located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 2005 the center earned the distinction of becoming the region’s first Joint Commission certified primary stroke center* and has earned re-certification at each opportunity. The stroke program at Parkview Regional Medical Center achieved comprehensive stroke certification by DNV GL - Healthcare in July 2018. Comprehensive stroke certification indicates the highest level of stroke care, which is significant for individuals who experience serious stroke events.
The stroke center is supported by a comprehensive care team comprised of physicians, nurses, radiology technicians, lab personnel, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians and more.
Together this team excels in stroke treatment and prevention by combining:
- Outstanding medical expertise
- Interdisciplinary teamwork
- Patient and family-focused care
- World-class technology
- Participation in national stroke research
- Community health education
The center is named for the late Stanley Wissman, MD, a widely respected Fort Wayne neurologist who advocated for development of stroke rehabilitation services, so stroke patients did not have to suffer the devastating effects of this condition. Under the leadership of Stroke Medical Director Shamir Haji, MD, and Neuroscience Medical Director Fen-Lei Chang, MD, PhD, the center continues to build on Dr. Wissman’s approach by combining state-of-the-art imaging, an intensive care unit staffed with nurses certified in the care of patients with neurological conditions, and the expertise provided by area neurologists to bring the highest-quality lifesaving treatments to stroke patients.
*Joint Commission certification is granted based on recommendations for stroke care from the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association.
