What is a general surgeon?

A general surgeon is a physician who has been trained to understand diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, skin and breast. They are trained in the use of surgery as a course of treatment.

Why would I see a general surgeon?

You may see a general surgeon for multiple reasons that occur in the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, skin or breast.

Do I need a referral from a family practice physician to see a general surgeon?

Many insurance companies do not require a referral to see a general surgeon. However, it is always better to check with your insurance company if you have questions.

How do I make an appointment to see a general surgeon?

What should I bring to my first appointment?
  • Insurance card
  • Driver’s license or other state/federally issued identification
  • A list of your medications
  • Any paper work that was sent to you before your appointment 
What can I expect during my first appointment?

The surgeon will ask you many questions about symptoms, past or recent illnesses and past surgeries.

The surgeon may do a physical exam, depending on your symptoms and illness.
