Your primary care provider (PCP) is typically the first person you go to when you have a health concern. But your relationship with your physician shouldn’t just be reactive. They can help you achieve a healthy lifestyle, stay on top of preventative screenings, manage ongoing conditions and coordinate specialized care. To get the most out of your visits, take an active role in your care. This includes coming prepared, sharing information and asking the right questions.

If you aren’t sure how to get the ball rolling with your provider, these six questions will help you achieve a more valuable visit with your doctor.

Question No. 1 – Am I up to date on all my vaccinations?

As adults, it is easy to lose track of our vaccinations. Some diseases that can be prevented with vaccines require a booster shot as we age. Every time you see your doctor, it’s good to check your vaccination record and make sure you are up to date.

Question No. 2 – Are there any screenings you recommend for me?

Cancer screenings are important for early detection. Your doctor may recommend different tests, such as heart screenings or specific blood work, based on your age as well as medical and family histories. It’s a good idea to talk through the options, especially if you or your family has had recent health changes.

Question No. 3 – Could you explain that in an easier way?

It’s important for you to understand lab and test results. If something your doctor says is unclear, ask them to explain it again in a way that makes more sense to you. Healthcare can be complex. Your provider wants you to feel comfortable and informed about your health.

Question No. 4 – Have any new medications or therapies become available since my last visit?

Healthcare is advancing every day. New treatments or medicine might have become available since your last visit. Talk to your doctor about any new or existing health issues and ask if there are any new interventions that could help.

Question No. 5 – Can you connect me with someone who can help?

If you need help with a specific health concern or goal, ask your doctor for a referral. Your provider can connect you with a specialist or other resources that can help meet your needs.

Question No. 6 – What is one simple step I can take to keep improving my health?

You can always find new ways to improve your health. Your doctor knows your medical record and can offer suggestions on ways to improve your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

During Wise Healthcare Consumer Month, remember that asking questions is a great way to get the most out of your visits with your primary care provider.
