Everyone needs an outlet; a way to unwind after a long day at the office. For Mark O’Shaughnessy, MD, PPG – Cardiology, that outlet is tending to his apiary (also known as a “bee yard”) on his property in LaGrange, Indiana.

The cardiologist invited us up on a sunny Saturday morning – which just happened to be National Honey Bee Day – to meet “the ladies” (worker bees are all female) and take a closer look at the unique skills he’s been cultivating for nearly a decade.

Moving among the familiar buzz of the colonies he’s created brings the physician an immense amount of peace and satisfaction. Most weekends, you’ll find Dr. O’Shaughnessy standing back and admiring the roles playing out within the walls of the hives. He relishes the coming and going of the insects, each with a specific job to carry out. If they’ve taught him anything, he says it’s that we shouldn’t “sweat the small stuff”. That’s a message we can all appreciate.
