Summer is a popular time to take young family and friends to local fairs, theme parks and amusement parks. While the attractions are often entertaining, these adventures can also bring long lines, hours of standing and tons of walking, which can really take a toll on your feet. As a podiatrist, I like to always help you be as prepared as possible. Let’s talk about how you can set yourself up for comfort, at least from the ankles down.
Go with a tried-and-true option.
Do not wear brand new shoes to a marathon day on your feet! This is not the time to break in a fresh pair of sneakers. As I’m sure we’ve all experienced, sometime new shoes can be too stiff and cause pain or rubbing on the feet. It’s best to opt for a trusted set and, instead, get used to those new shoes by breaking them in by taking long distance walks at home.
Embrace the barrier.
As I’ve said before, socks are so important. This layer of material between your shoe and your foot helps absorb moisture and debris. Socks also prevent friction and reduce odor of the feet. Not to mention, they give you a little extra cushion, which is never a bad thing. I recommend staying away from spandex, nylon or printed socks, as they collect moisture and hold in bacteria.
Accommodating the conditions.
Since we’re talking about taking these day trips during summer months, we can assume that it will likely be hot. Some people don’t want to wear socks when it’s warm because it makes them feel overheated. One suggestion would be to wear lighter-colored shoes and clothes to help keep you cool while walking around in the sun. Also, a mesh-style shoe will allow air to get into the shoes, which can keep your feet at a more comfortable temperature.
Consider a spare pair.
If you are doing multiple days in a park, you may want to bring a second pair of shoes so that the shoes you wore on the first day can completely air out overnight and the cushion and support can restore.
I hope you get a chance to enjoy some fun attractions and destinations this summer. With a little planning, the right pair of shoes and a perfect set of socks, you’ll be able to cover the park in comfort!
