The sounds of screeching firecrackers and sights of bold hues illuminating the summer sky are upon us. But with all the fun and fanfare of the holiday, we often forget just how dangerous these sparklers and rockets and Roman candles can be. Assistant Chief Jim Murua, Fire Marshal, Fort Wayne Fire Department, has some basic guidelines for smart fireworks practices so you can enjoy your Fourth of July celebration the safe way.
Fireworks Safety
- The best way to enjoy fireworks is to visit one of the many public fireworks displays around the area put on by professionals.
- Always read directions and warning labels on fireworks. If a device is not marked with the contents, directions, and warning label, do not light it!
- Please remember to be considerate of your neighbors and their property.
- Never let children handle, play with, or light any fireworks.
- If you plan to use fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area.
- Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
- When setting off fireworks, wear eye and hand protection to avoid burns.
- Use in a clear, open, level area and keep your audience a safe distance away from the launch site.
- Do not alter a fireworks device nor make your own fireworks.
- Light only one firework at a time.
- Never attempt to re-light, alter, or fix any “dud’ firework item.
- Have a fire extinguisher, water supply, hose, or bucket of water nearby (just in case).
- Know how to properly use a fire extinguisher.
- Please remember to be considerate of your pets, as fireworks can cause them a great deal of stress.
- Soak your used fireworks in water before properly disposing of them.
