nursing research

This post was written by Cyndi Coyne, BSN, RN, CCM, nursing informatics specialist, Parkview Health.

Most clinical professionals have heard the term “evidence-based practice.” It drives how we provide excellent, high-quality care to our patients every day. Back in nursing school, we regularly performed literature searches for research articles, studies and journals. Understanding that research is the cornerstone of evidence-based practice has been an integral part of nursing since the very beginning and has had an immeasurable impact on patient outcomes.

Nursing research at Parkview

When you think of who does nursing research, does your mind immediately think of only the big Ivy League academic centers, like Harvard, Yale and University of Pennsylvania. Or maybe The Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Emory or Indiana University come to mind? They are all fine institutions that, undoubtedly, have strong research programs, but you can find a substantial amount of outstanding nursing research a lot closer to home, right here at Parkview Health.

In fact, since 2016, 60 nursing research studies have been performed at Parkview, 44 of them have been completed, 16 are currently active. Topics include:

  • Standardizing surgical prep processes

  • An interactive sepsis education program

  • Reducing opioid use through multimodal pain therapy

  • The development of a new assessment tool to determine a patient’s fall risk in order to apply proper, individualized interventions to prevent them from falling

How to learn about nursing research at Parkview

Our nursing research studies can all be found in the Parkview Research Repository, where 23 new articles were added in 2024 alone. The repository is home to more than 100 published works that were downloaded 6,248 times last year by people from all over the world. This is work being done by Parkview nurses at all levels across the health system who may be your friends, colleagues and co-workers. Ordinary nurses who had an idea spark from asking the question, “I wonder if….?” or thinking, “There has to be a better way.”

Another fantastic way to learn about the latest intriguing research is by attending the 6th Annual Parkview Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Symposium. Our theme this year is “From Paper to Practice: The Art of Implementation Science,” and it’s scheduled for Thursday, November 13, at the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation.

Not only will you see examples of the fascinating research being done by talented Parkview nurses who will be there to share their insights, but there’s also a guest keynote speaker, poster and podium presentations, breakout sessions and an interactive workshop. We encourage nurses who feel inspired to turn an idea into an exciting and engaging research project!
