Changes in the weather, more time indoors and the social engagements that come with the holiday season mean more exposure to potential illnesses. We asked Ashley Groeller, PA, Parkview Virtual Walk-in Clinic, for some general guidance going into the germiest time of the year.

What is the immune system and why is it important?

Your immune system serves as the body’s primary defense against invaders such as germs. It plays a crucial role in preventing illness and promotes healing when a person is unwell or injured.

What illnesses are most prevalent during the holiday season?

As we get into the winter months, we frequently see illnesses like influenza, RSV, COVID and Rhinovirus, just to name a few.

What are some strategies for strengthening the immune system?

To enhance the effectiveness of your immune system, it is important to consume a nutritious diet, stay hydrated, engage in regular physical activity, stay up to date on vaccines and ensure adequate sleep. Natural immune boosters like vitamin C, zinc and elderberry can be helpful to keep your immune system functioning at a high level.

What are some common symptoms of illness that would warrant staying at home and/or away from others?

It’s important to take precautions if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose

Please ensure you cover your cough and wash your hands frequently. If your condition is severe, consider staying home to prevent spreading germs to others.

Additional insights

Did you know that negative thoughts can trigger chemical reactions in your body, increasing stress levels and consequently lowering your immune system? So, I would encourage you to fully embrace the holiday season and fill your days with joy and love!
