Lifestyle Behaviors Before and After the Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes

About

Type 2 diabetes is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. While healthy lifestyle behaviors in combination with prescribed medication are central to disease management, few individuals adhere to current recommendations. The objective of this work was to explore immediate and lasting changes in lifestyle behaviors (including diet and physical activity) after a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and examine factors associated with behavior change. Data for this project work was obtained from the Nurses’ Health Study (1976-2016) and Nurses’ Health Study II (1989-2017). This work contributes to our understanding of how individuals modify diet and physical activity over time and will be used to inform tailored recommendations for lifestyle management.
