Cancer Genetics Clinic

While most cancers are not hereditary, some families can have an increased risk for certain cancers. The Cancer Genetics Clinic at the Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center provides services that help answer questions about the risk of genetic cancers and counseling related to genetic testing.

Board-Certified Genetic Counselor Melissa Dempsey, MS, CGC, assists patients, physicians and family members in assessing patients’ cancer risk, ordering appropriate genetic testing, and discussing medical management.

 

The Cancer Genetics Clinic offers:

  • Genetic counseling

  • Cancer risk assessment

  • Genetic testing

  • Cancer screening recommendations

  • DNA banking

Who should consider
genetic counseling?

Genetic counseling is appropriate for individuals or families with any of the following:

  • Cancer at a young age (younger than 50)

  • Multiple primary tumors in an individual

  • Multiple family members with the same type of cancer or related cancers including breast/ovarian cancer or colon/uterine cancer

  • Multiple colon polyps

  • Rare cancers including ovarian cancer, male breast cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, retinoblastoma,  hepatoblastoma, adrenocortical carcinoma, and pheochromocytoma
