The inside story on your health

If colon health is the furthest thing from your mind, you might want to consider this: colon health affects your overall quality of life. Eating right helps. So does exercise. And so does getting a colonoscopy. Colorectal cancer is a common cancer in men and women over 50 and begins without symptoms. Colonoscopy can spot trouble early.

Colonoscopy

Did you know that colorectal cancer is a highly treatable cancer when it’s caught early? And colonoscopy is the screening method of choice for discovering cancer at a treatable stage – or even preventing cancer by detecting pre-cancerous polyps and removing them.

If you’re over 50, be proactive about protecting your health and consider scheduling a colonoscopy. The American Cancer Society recommends a colonoscopy at age 50 for every woman and man with no unusual risk factors (such as a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease or a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps). After that, a colonoscopy every 10 years is recommended.

What is a colonoscopy?

Your colon is the part of your lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract where wastes from the food you’ve eaten are accumulated. When polyps – areas of abnormal cell growth – develop in the colon or rectum, they can become cancerous over time.

Colonoscopy:

  • Is a painless procedure used to look inside the colon for signs of cancer or polyps

  • Enables your physician to view the inside of your GI tract using a flexible endoscope and take tissue samples or remove polyps as necessary

  • Takes about 30 minutes, typically

  • Is performed on an outpatient basis under light sedation
