Mammography is a simple, quick, non-invasive screening test used in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer. The procedure uses low-dose X-rays to safely create images of the breast tissue. Radiologists read the images to determine whether cancer is present.
Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. The American Cancer Society estimates that:
- A woman’s chance of developing invasive breast cancer is 1 in 8 across her lifetime.
- The chance that a woman will die of breast cancer is 1 in 35.
The encouraging news is that deaths from breast cancer have been on the decrease since 1990, and early detection in younger women has made a difference. Well over 2 million women alive today have survived breast cancer.
Early detection
The Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center is committed to helping women beat breast cancer through mammography that can detect cancer early, when chances are best for successful treatment.
Parkview urges women to do breast self-exams each month, visit their physician or other qualified healthcare provider for an annual clinical breast exam and follow the American Cancer Society recommendation to have a first mammogram by age 40 and then every year afterward.

Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography
Parkview and FW Radiology – in partnership with Francine’s Friends – provide the opportunity for women throughout northeast Indiana to access annual mammograms. This partnership takes mammograms “on the road” thanks to the Francine’s Friends Mobile Mammography coach. Equipped with digital imaging equipment and operated by Breast Diagnostic Center staff, the coach makes it convenient for women to receive mammograms close to home or work.
Funding is available to help provide mammograms for women who are uninsured, underinsured or without resources to pay for the service.
